Can Hamsters Eat Rabbit Food?

Many hamster owners also have other pets such as dogs, cats, guinea pigs and rabbits.

Once you have one pet then it becomes more tempting to get another and so many owners will own a pet such as a rabbit.

So if this is the case, is it possible for them to eat the same food.

Purchasing pet food can be expensive, and so if they were to share the same food then this would cut down the costs of keeping the pets considerably.

So can hamsters eat rabbit food?

The answer is that some foods can be shared and some foods can’t.

What foods can hamsters and rabbits both eat?

Both rabbits and hamsters very much enjoy eating vegetables and fruit.

Vegetables such as;

Basil, Bok choy, Broccoli leaves, Carrot tops, Celery, Cilantro, Clover, Collard greens, Dandelion leaves, Dill, Kale, Lettuce, Mint, Mustard greens, Parsley, and Watercress can be eaten by both pets.

Fruits such as;

Apple, Cherries, Pear, Peach, Plum, Kiwi, Papaya, Mango, Berries, Pineapple, Banana, Melons, Star Fruit, Apricot, Currants
and Nectarine can be eaten by both pets.

Grasses and hays are the main staple of a rabbit’s diet and can also be eaten by hamsters. Timothy hay and Meadow hay are very good for hamsters to chew on as well and they will enjoy grinding their teeth on them. They will also both enjoy alfalfa hay, but feed sparingly due to the amount of calcium that it contains.

Water is the main drink of both animals and should be fed regularly to them.

Both species need water on a constant basis to be fed to them to ensure that they get the hydration that they require.

What foods can’t hamsters and rabbits share?

Specialised rabbit or hamster foods are not good for either to eat. Hamsters cannot eat specialised rabbit pellets, mixes or muesli and Rabbits can eat hamster mix or pellets.

Both types of food are made especially for the dietary requirements of each pet and should not be eaten by the other pet.

Both rabbits and hamsters can’t eat citrus fruits. They are far too acidic for both species to eat and will make them sick of they are eaten.

Foods with a lot of water in them will give both species bloat. Especially if they eat a lot of them.

Foods with a lot of sugar in them will not be good for them.

Man-made foods are not good for either species either.
